It has been 8 days since we arrived in Mukurwe-ini and we have experienced many things. On Tuesday we were introduced to our schools and welcomed into the classrooms. The students were very excited to have a Mzungu (white person) around. The schools in which we are placed (Mwati Primary, Ghatukamundu Primary, and Kihuti Secondary) vary in resources and facilities but the children remain the same throughout…very pleasant and eager to learn.
Yesterday Jessica H and I attended the district games at a local school. The games included were football (soccer), net ball, and volleyball. Net ball is almost the same as basketball except you don’t dribble the ball, you throw it from end to end. There were many children around and everyone displayed excellent athletic skills. I was fortunate enough to be selected as the celebrity referee for the girl’s football game. The girls just started playing soccer in 2002, but they are fearless and would do well back in PEI. It was a great experience. Next time I will have to referee the boys.
We are looking forward to starting the community projects soon. Stay tuned for more blogs later in the week.
